A semi-choir of sopranos and altos joined the Didcot Symphony Orchestra in their concert at Cornerstone Art Centre on Sunday night. We had the pleasure of singing the parts of the Chorus of Sirens in Wagner’s Tannhäuser: Venusberg Music. We sang off-stage ( “invisible ” in Wagner’s words, so we didn’t take it personally!) trying to tempt Venus and Tannhäuser in seductive strains to “come to the beach … where our passion is burning…” We were then able to sit in the audience of the second half to enjoy Rimsky-Korsakov’s Symphonic Suite. It was a pleasure to hear the high standard of the orchestra, and also the virtuosic violin solo by Kate Bailey.
